Freddy Ramirez

Freddy Ramírez, the former director of the Miami-Dade County Police, intends to return to a position within the county under the leadership of Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. The mayor announced on Wednesday the hiring of a new administrator to oversee public safety, and Ramírez will return in early 2024 as an advisor on the agency’s transition to an elected sheriff’s office.

Ramírez, who held the position of Miami-Dade County Police director before a suicide attempt in July, seeks to assume an advisory role in the Miami-Dade Police Department to assist with the county’s transition in 2025, from an appointed police director to an elected sheriff.

Before the suicide attempt, Ramírez was considered the frontrunner for the sheriff position. However, due to the severe injuries he sustained, he was forced to withdraw from his candidacy in September.

The former police director shot himself with his police-issued firearm on July 23, hours after an encounter with authorities in Tampa. It was reported that Ramírez brandished his weapon during a dispute with his wife, but the allegation was never substantiated, and no charges were filed against him.

The county’s statement mentioned that Ramírez will return to work in late January and play a key role in the restructuring of the Miami-Dade Police Department.

However, some critics question Ramírez’s ability to fulfill this new position, arguing that he is not qualified for it. Additionally, there is speculation that Mayor Daniella Levine Cava gave him this job to elevate his profile and potentially endorse him again as a sheriff candidate, benefiting her campaign consultant.

These comments reference the previous controversy in which Cava’s last endorsed sheriff candidate shot himself in the head during an altercation with his wife, losing an eye.

So far, both Ramírez and Mayor Levine Cava have declined to make additional comments on the hiring and the former police director’s future role. More details about this new phase in Ramírez’s career and the restructuring of the Miami-Dade Police Department are expected to be revealed in the coming months.
